2017 Nissan Rogue Sport
The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport cuts off more than a foot in overall length and over 200 lbs. in weight when compared to the regular Rogue. Is this smaller version of the Rogue fit to be called a sport?
The Rogue Sport actually has a smaller engine than the regular Rogue. The Rogue Sport has a 2.0 liter four-cylinder that produces 141 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque. The Rogue has a 2.5 liter four-cylinder rated at 170 hp and 175 lb-ft.
Strangely enough, the Rogue actually gets 1-2 mpg better than the Rogue Sport. Usually a smaller engine with less power would produce better fuel economy than its larger, more powerful counterpart- not to mention that the Sport weighs a couple hundred pounds less.
The EPA estimates for the Rogue Sport gets 25/32 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, and 24/30 with all-wheel drive. Fuel economy isn't everything when it comes to a smaller SUV, but it is a big selling point as many of these buyers will look to get the best mileage for commutes and driving their kids to soccer practice.
The Rogue Sport has 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space, with hidden storage compartments in the floor. When the rear seats are folded, the cargo volume increases to 61.1 cubic feet. Unlike the regular Rogue, the Sport does not offer a third-row seat option.
The Sport does excel over competitors in terms of safety options. These options include: automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. However, these options are only available on the top SL model, which starts at nearly $5,000 more than the base model.
In terms of competition's pricing, the Rogue Sport is more expensive than the Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX-3, Honda HR-V, and Chevrolet Trax. It compares favorably to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
So is the Rogue Sport fit to be deemed a sport? In some ways, yes. It is lighter and smaller than the regular rogue. It has less cargo space and is as fun to drive, on some roads. However, it has a smaller engine and returns worse fuel economy. In these ways, it is not as sporty as the standard Rogue.
